John Miller, Author
John Miller has shown time and time again that even when life threw him obstacles, he has always worked hard to overcome them. Diagnosed with autism at age 5, John was behind both academically and physically. His parents set him on the path to get stronger and he eventually excelled in sports and school.
John went on to win several gold medals in Special Olympics gymnastics and track and field as well as, earning a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. John ran cross country and track for his high school and ended up winning a leadership award and was even chosen prom king. His accomplishments have been chronicled by both local tv and newspapers. He has also been featured on podcasts and radio appearances. He inspires both children and adults with his “can do” attitude and his kind soul.
As a small child, John’s parents recognized he was born storyteller in his own special way. He was always playing and wrestling with his hands, which was his autistic stim or tic. He went on to create Handom, an imaginary world where all the inhabitants are shaped like hands, have one eye and are colorful and have good and kind hearts. His mom encouraged him to start drawing and writing about his characters.
John’s first book, Adventures in Handom was released when he was 17 and John wrote and illustrated it. The book was received well by both children and adults because of the vivid, colorful drawings and the positive message of having a good and kind heart.
After presenting and reading to well over 1,000 people, John released his second book, The Magical Heart of Handom at age 19 about the power of friendship. This led to John deciding to attend college to get his degree in Childhood Education.
John has gone on to become an accomplished inspirational speaker and has spoken to over 4,200 kids and adults and counting. He loves to share his story and his journey to show children, with and without disabilities, that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself. John wants to go on and write more stories and has almost completed his degree in Early Childhood Education at Northern Essex Community College where he wants to work with small children and pass on his kindness and creativity. He lives in Methuen, MA with his parents, his Grammy Jo, and his two dog “brothers,” Doc and Lenny.
